Blab Translation vs Google Translate
Google's extension translates only highlighted text, and Chrome's own page translation replaces the original; Blab Translation shows the translation under each paragraph so you read both. It also translates text in images, YouTube subtitles, manga and PDFs with formulas kept, none of which the Google extension does.
| Blab Translation | Google Translate extension | |
|---|---|---|
| Whole pages | Bilingual, under each paragraph | Left to Chrome, which replaces the text |
| Selected text | Yes | Yes |
| PDFs | Layout and formulas kept | Website only, up to 10 MB / 300 pages |
| Manga, image text, subtitles | Yes | Not in the extension |
| Price | Extension free | Free |
Where they differ
Since version 2.14 the Google Translate extension no longer translates pages; its listing says Chrome does that natively. On translate.google.com you can upload PDF, Word, PowerPoint and Excel files up to 10 MB, and PDFs up to 300 pages, but text in images and scanned pages is not translated.
Blab Translation can use the same kind of on-device engine through Chrome's built-in translator, or your own AI key, and adds bilingual layout, region rules for each site, and subtitles.
Where Blab Translation falls short
- Google Translate covers more languages and is installed by tens of millions of people.
- Google's engine itself is not one of Blab Translation's engines.
Questions
Does Blab Translation replace Chrome's built-in translation?
It sits beside it. Chrome's translation swaps the page; Blab Translation keeps the original and adds the translation, and can be set to translate only part of a site.
