Translated captions on your television
Blab Translation for Android TV lays captions in your language over whatever is playing — Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video or a live channel. It waits in the background; press start and the captions appear.
Over any app
The captions are a layer above the player, so they work with every streaming app on the television rather than a list of supported ones.
Follows the film's own subtitles
Name the film, or let it be recognised, and the captions follow its subtitle track: the real lines, and the per-minute meter stops.
Or listens, if you let it
Without a subtitle track it listens and translates as the dialogue happens. The microphone is optional and opens only after you press start.
INSTALL · WITH DOWNLOADER
Install it in five steps
The app is not in the Google Play or Amazon stores yet, so it is side-loaded with Downloader, a free app in both. Every step is done with the remote.
- 01
Install Downloader
Search for Downloader (by AFTVnews) in the Amazon Appstore on Fire TV, or in Google Play on Google TV and Android TV, and install it.
- 02
Let Downloader install apps
Fire TV: Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options → Install unknown apps → Downloader → On. No Developer options? Open Settings → My Fire TV → About and press the device name seven times.
Google TV and Android TV: Settings → Apps → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources → Downloader → On. On older Android TV it is under Settings → Device Preferences → Security & restrictions.
- 03
Enter the code 1067147
Open Downloader, select the address box, type 1067147 and press Go. The code always fetches the latest build. If it does not resolve, type the address instead: blab-translation.com/tv/latest.apk
- 04
Install
When Android asks, choose Install, then Done. Downloader then offers to delete the downloaded file; it is no longer needed.
- 05
Open it and pair
Open Blab Translation from the apps row. It shows a QR code and six digits: scan the code with your phone, or enter the digits on the TV page of your account. Then allow the overlay; the microphone is optional.
Had a test build on this television?
Uninstall it first, from the television's app settings. Test builds are signed with a different key, and Android refuses to install over them with only “App not installed”. Pair again afterwards, and remove the old entry under Devices if it is still listed.
No Downloader?
Open blab-translation.com/tv/latest.apk in the television's own browser, or download the file on a computer and copy it over on a USB stick or with adb install.
